MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio — The owner of a contaminated structure in the Southland shopping district will seek state funding for asbestos removal at the retail site.
City Council at its June 28 meeting passed a resolution of support for that effort.
Brixmor GA Southland Shopping Center LLC owns the building at 6944 W. 130th St. and will apply to the Ohio Department of Development for Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program funding. The program has $350 million available to assist in cleaning up commercial and industrial properties across the state.
Mayor Matt Castelli said the grant request is another step in the revitalization of the Southland shopping district.
“This is a portion of the Brixmor property where the old Burlington site was located,” Castelli told council. “There is currently activity on that particular site, and there are interested developers. Brixmor is looking to get help with remediation, and a potential demolition, of that building.”
Director of Public Service Jim Herron stressed the importance of local communities backing the state’s hazardous substances removal program.
“We absolutely support this project, and it’s a great use of the funds,” Herron said.
